Hood College prepares students to excel in meeting the personal, professional and global challenges of the future. Hood is committed to the integration of the liberal arts, the professions and technology, to the exploration of values, a sense of community and to the preparation of students for lives of responsibility and leadership.

The College is located in historic Frederick, Maryland, at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and an hour from Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. Surrounded by rolling farmlands, Frederick is home to museums, historic sites and attractions, antique shops, specialty restaurants, and a beautifully restored Historic District.

Hood's proximity to major biological research centers, multinational corporations, high technology companies, and the nation's capital gives students access to a wealth of opportunities not available at most small colleges.

Founded in 1893, Hood offers bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees in 28 major fields of study, 14 master's degrees and five certificate and certification programs. Hood's notably small class sizes, extraordinary faculty, outstanding student-to-faculty ratio and an attractive and friendly campus contribute to an exceptional learning experience.

The Hodson Trust Academic Scholarship is the most prestigious honor scholarship offered by Hood College to students of outstanding academic ability. Each year, a limited number of students who have excelled in their secondary school programs are invited by the College to apply for these four-year awards. The Hodson Trust Academic Scholarship Program was established at Hood College in 1978. Both U.S. residents and international students may receive consideration for the awards.

Hodson Trust Academic Scholars receive awards ranging from $17,000 to full tuition. The scholarship is applicable to tuition charges and is renewable for each of the four undergraduate years at Hood.

The Hodson Trust Star Scholarship program provides up to three full-tuition scholarships to eligible Maryland veterans who served in Afghanistan or Iraq after September 11, 2001. The undergraduate and graduate scholarships provide full tuition, room and board, books and mandatory fees not otherwise met by federal, state and outside assistance.

In addition to scholarships, the Hodson Trust has supported Hood College for many years through its gifts to the Beneficial-Hodson Library and Information Technology Center; for the renovation and construction of the Hodson Science and Technology Center, which opened in spring 2002; and most recently, the 2007 renovation of the campus' main auditorium and performance center in Rosenstock Hall, now named Hodson Auditorium.

The 68,000-square-foot Hodson Science and Technology Center houses programs in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, environmental studies, physics, mathematics and computer science.

New and expanded classroom and laboratory areas allow students to integrate the laboratory and lecture components of their work.

The 57,500-square-foot Beneficial-Hodson Library and Information Technology Center, located at the College's main entrance, features four levels in an architectural style harmonious with the existing campus.

The Information Technology Center provides a wide variety of data and materials through a videotape library, slide collections, audio CD-ROMs and computer files. It is the hub of a campus-wide computerized information network. Network users are able to access information from library computers, as well as from computers in faculty and staff offices, residence halls and off-campus locations.

A series of gifts from the Hodson Trust have been the primary source of funding for the Hodson Computer Network, supporting information technology initiatives at Hood that have resulted in one of the most sophisticated private computer facilities in Frederick County. This state-of-the-art equipment is housed in a 2,500-square-foot room with glass walls, which permit a view of the facility.

This campus-wide communications network provides access not only to the Hood library, but also to an extended network of state, national and international library systems from computers linked to the network through the World Wide Web.

The Beneficial-Hodson Library combines all the best features of a traditional library--comfortable study areas, an extensive collection of books, journals, and audiovisual materials--with up-to-date computing technology. It serves as the heart of the campus-wide information network, enabling students and faculty to connect from homes, offices, or residence halls to Hood's own library or those of other institutions, to search databases over the Internet, or to collaborate with students and faculty at other colleges and universities. This sophisticated technology, supported by gifts from The Hodson Trust, results in a true capacity for global communication and knowledge.
